Hsu Shu-ching 1)claims weightlifting silver

Chinese Taipei's Hsu Shu-ching (許淑淨) won silver in women's weightlifting at the London Olympics late yesterday.

She 2)snatched 96 kilograms and lifted 123 kilograms in the 3)clean and jerk for a total of 219 kilograms, which placed her behind Kazakhstan's Zulfiya Chinshanlo but before Christina Iovu of the Republic of Moldova.

Earlier the Russian women's 4)archery team knocked out the Chinese Taipei 5)trio in a tense 6)quarterfinals shoot-off at the historic Lord's Cricket Ground.

Conditions were picture-perfect yesterday afternoon, as the sun broke out from overcast skies just before the round.

Chinese Taipei's Tan Ya-ting (譚雅婷), Le Chien-ying (雷千瑩) and Lin Chia-en (林佳恩) capitalized on the fair weather and very light winds to gain a comfortable three-point lead in the opening end.

The trio 7)faltered in the second and third ends, losing by two and one respectively, but caught up and tied with Russia with a score of 216 in the final end.

In cases of a tie in archery, a three-arrow shoot-off is held. If this doesn't separate them, the team closest to the center of the target is the winner.

In the shoot-off it was Russia that just edged ahead, winning the round 28-26.

Chinese Taipei was competing yesterday against Russia's Ksenia Perova, Kristina Timofeeva and Inna Stepanova.

Both teams sank an X, but Russia scored eight 8)10s whereas Chinese Taipei scored just six 10s.

Chinese Taipei also fired more 8s than Russia, which lost the team its lead, according to Coach Ni Dah-jhih (倪大智).

The Chinese Taipei women's team had been ranked third in their division. The three won't advance to the semifinals, but will take part in the women's individual event that starts next week.
